TERRI and PETER have a new venture - PHOENIX RIVERSIDE LODGE (Phoenix Lodge is now closed) You can stay on this site to read about it or visit the new site via the LINKS page

Welcome to our website.

Phoenix Riverside Lodge is indeed Paradise re-visited - welcome to our jungle by the river.

Phoenix Riverside Lodge, affectionately referred to as 'Riverside', is currently undergoing a total refurbishment and in the coming months will provide traditional African, high quality accommodation with a first class service. Please see the 'accommodation' page for further details.

Under the caring and experienced direction of Peter and Terri, a British couple, resident in The Gambia who have previously run a successful Lodge in Bijilo. The Riverside Management and staff will give you a very warm welcome and help to make your holiday as enjoyable as possible in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Starting witha free complimentary drink on arrival.

Fully licensed and registered with the Gambia Tourist Board, Phoenix Riverside is a 20 minute drive from the main tourist areas and only 35 minutes drive from Banjul International Airport. You sit back and relax whilst we provide free airport transfers and we have four tried and trusted drivers - Abdou, Alieu, Buba and Mohammed who will be happy to take you on short taxi drives or full day tours, we have a list of prices in reception.

'Riverside' is located in the West Coast Region of The Gambia, West Africa, in a small hamlet called Majeta, within the historic fishing village of Tanjeh (sometimes spelt Tanji).

This stunningly beautiful and unique jungle resort, nestling beside the quiet waters of a river which leads either to the ocean one way or towards Madiana village the other, is home to many species of birds and fishing is available directly onto the river in our own canoes or boats.

There is a Bantaba restaurant and bar where you can enjoy local, Gambian and European food in peaceful surroundings or a local beer or other chilled drinks, with only the bird song to break the silence.

The Bantaba may also be available at quieter times as a conference facility or for Weddings and private functions.

There is a large free-form fresh water pool with plenty of comfy sunbeds, cushions and towels for your comfort.

There are many, many trees in our extensive grounds affording shade from the heat of the African sun.

The activities in and around Phoenix Riverside include bird watching, fishing, canoeing, boating and swimming as well as cultural encounters with the local communities including cooking classes, African drum bands and dancing, canoe or donkey cart trips to the main road and beach and daily tours of the local area (not by donkey but by air conditioned 4 by 4)!

Locally there is the famous Tanjeh fishing beach, a hive of colourful, bustling activity all day with the 'catch' landed daily from the local fishing boats and from the beach the fish is distributed throughout The Gambia and also exported.

We do feel that Riverside is not really young child friendly, although children aged 10 years and over are very welcome.

We can accommodate a maximum of 35 here so it is never crowded

Terri and Peter live in a neighbouring compound with their four dogs and have installed a competent, efficient, friendly and professional team to run Riverside. Whilst not involved in an every day capacity with the running of Riverside, Terri and Peter are always available if required.
